GAARRR

Let my misfortune be a lesson for all of us. Today I turned on my desktop with the intention of updating the songs on my iPOD. I had gotten a lot of music before I left school and the 20 gig void needed to be filled with something new. Upon booting into xp, I tried to click on things, finding that my mouse was working but nothing else was. That's happened once or twice, I figured I didn't have the patience and just did a hard reboot. Test cpu, test ram, test hdd's....
...
..
.

system32/config/system corrupted. shit.

I spent an hour researching how I was going to fix this, the solution was to take the old System file and replace it with the default 'repair' version. Then I was supposed to copy the registry from a previous restore point and then restore my computer and magically everything would work again. Knowing my luck I should have known better. Apparently in the 4 years that I had been using my desktop that I built... oh sometime my freshman year of college, I had never ever set a System Restore point. There was no backup of my registry. I lose.

New idea. Put my hard drive in my external hdd enclosure, hook it up and send it to my other external hard drive. My laptop didn't like to see two external drives. I was screwed again. HDD in. HDD out. HDD in. HDD out.

Apparently at some point, excessive shutting down and turning on had corrupted even more stuff. CRAP CRAP CRAP. Now I couldn't even get into safe mode with the 'repair' system file. Now i'm sitting here in DOS, trying to recover my files with TestDisk. This sucks. Once mac releases it's $1000 macbook in black, i'm buying it. I can't deal with this all the time.

John McCain Can Speak For Himself

ANNOUNCEMENT: THIS BLOG HAS MOVED TO www.wang-tastic.blogspot.com UPDATE YOUR LINKS!

My college graduation from Columbia University was quickly approaching. John McCain was the Class Day speaker for the college and there was a storm brewing on campus, in New York City, and in the blogosphere about his commencement address. By virtue of the instant information nature of the internet, John McCain's speech was posted on his website, available for all of us to read.

The speech was nothing new. There were the congratulations, there were the words of advice, there was the central theme of informed discourse, and of being open to change. To my surprise there was also mention of the Iraq War and McCain's support and continued support of the administration's handling and carrying out of the US' involvement in a war torn Iraq. It was immediately obvious from just a casual reading that the speech was out of place, it echoed more of a 2008 Presidential candidate stump speech than it did as a commencement address. After a few anecdotes, personal history, validation of the Iraq War, and another anecdote, one had to wonder when the graduates were going to be given their validation for the hard work of four years immersed in academia. Once or twice I read mention of social responsibility and discussion, but that was the extent of any pertinent message to the graduates.

This is not to say that McCain's speech was not good. In fact I thought it was very pertinent to current affairs and he was absolutely correct in his promotion of discussion (although I would argue, discussion about the Iraq War rings hollow as the very reason we are in Iraq is due to a fundamental lack of dialogue on the part of the Bush administration).

Many commentators have been pressing that those who have criticized McCain are stifling free speech. It could not disagree more. The entire issue of the commencement speeches given at Liberty University, the New School, and Columbia University has nothing to do with free speech. It is a celebration of our work as students; it is not a forum for policy debate and war justification. If our sole goal was to encourage free speech, any number of people could have made a speech; I would imagine that we would not invite the late Milosevic to our graduation, simply because he is a high profile figure that will make us question our outlook on the world.

May sixteenth, I woke up from a late night haze to a rainy early morning. It was an hour before my classmates were to convene and pass through a hurdle towards the next step in their lives. I read the Liberty University speech online; I knew it was going to be given again. The rain poured and I crawled back into bed, I was displeased with my University's choice of speaker and I was displeased at the virulent atmosphere that it had created amongst friends and classmates. Most of all I was displeased with our passivity.

John McCain came and went. Our protest was small and insignificant. Columbians were more interested in walking across the stage and being a step closer to getting our diplomas than preserving any sense of justice that the university had hopefully instilled in us. This is not surprising given that we are living in a society where we tolerate infringement on our rights as American citizens. We are afforded a Constitutional right to privacy from the government (if there is no suspicion of wrong doing); it is and should be troubling to all that government can use terror and security as a free pass in every scenario. If we can justify wire-tapping with possible terror, the same justification can be made to overstep rights to due process, rights to life and liberty. We should be troubled, we should not be passive.

New School mounted a tremendous protest from students and faculty alike. They should be commended in their exercise of constitutional rights. Students like Jean Rohe should neither be attacked nor intimidated by congressional aides like Mark Salter (who should know better). John McCain is no Milosevic, but his character is one that I do not believe should be extended to graduates, to myself. There is no question that McCain served bravely in his time of military service (likewise it is ridiculous that people have been criticizing Kerry and Murtha's military service). What I question is his loyalty to himself and sacrifices he makes of his character for political gain. Perhaps he believes that it is necessary to light the fires of friendship with the members of the Bush administration. Perhaps he forgot the 2000 election where he was slandered to embarrassing levels by Bush's team, allegations of illegitimate children, questioning his becoming a naval aviator by merit, questioning the legitimacy of his being awarded war medals, rumors of mental instability, etc etc. Perhaps it was a courageous display of forgiveness, but McCain has positioned himself to support those who sought to hurt and tear him down the most. He has been a stalwart of the Republican Party even in times of personal hardship and disloyalty.

What is the message towards the graduates of 2006? It is not that we should promote discourse. The reason we went to college in the first place was to participate in intelligent discourse. It is not that the War in Iraq is necessary. The message that we received is that if you want to succeed in the world, you need to bend over backwards and kiss the ass of even those who hate you. That is the message; it is one that I will not embrace on my life's journey.

Oh. I did not crawl back into bed during John McCain’s speech as a form of protest. I chose not go because I felt his speech was irrelevant, it was raining, and I am a proud graduate from the school of engineering whose graduation was at two o’clock that afternoon.

mothers against illegal aliens?

Mothers Against Illegal Aliens quite possibly is the stupidest organization I've ever heard of. The first I heard of them was from www.mediamatters.com where organization president, Michelle Dallacroce made the statement - "Well, I'm -- I have a question. What jobs do the women and the children do that we have to have them here other than their children's job is to dumb down the American children and overpopulate our schools?". You have to ask, how exactly are immigrants dumbing down American children? Do illegal immigrants have some sort of crazy communicable disease that is rendered benign by the citizenship process? I had to take a look at the website to try and find some answers, for such an unfounded statement I thought there must be some kind of backing for it or it would be unimaginable to take something like that onto national television. Then again... it was FOX News.

www.mothersagainstillegalaliens.com - first of all, the web address is horrendously long. You can't even hope to get a lot of web traffic with something like that. To answer the question of how immigrants supposedly dumb down American children, I went straight to the mission statement:

"Our beautiful Nation has been turned into a jungle by the mass invasion of illegal aliens - the streets of America; the neighborhoods and communities where we live; the malls and stores where we shop; the schools where our LEGAL children attend - and yes, even the churches where we worship - are now the Citadels of fear, bigotry, racism, physical danger and hate! The LEGAL children of America’s 21st century have become the scapegoats and the victims of this invasion of illegal aliens. They have become - the get behind, the left behind, the back of the class, the back of the bus, the get off the playground, the get out of my way - pawns and victims of peer abuse and societal indifference."

Fixing a broken immigration system is a worthy endeavor, but the MAIA statement is overtly racist to all immigrants. It is statements like theirs that have polarized the discussion, where a justified attack on illegal racism extends itself to all immigrants. Our nation has been turned into a "jungle" of illegal aliens... she sees them in the streets, the malls, the schools, etc. Pray tell how she knows that they are illegals. If they look hispanic, chinese, non-white obviously they must be illegals. If you couldn't tell, I was being facetious. Churches are now the citadels of fear, bigotry, racism, physical danger and hate? WOW. Perhaps she's seeing something that I am not. Is there some sort of underground illegal immigrant violent uprising going on in the churches? Come on. We all know why American children have fallen behind, they've fallen behind because Americans have become apathetic and have become used to an idea of entitlement. The belief that America is destined to be the wealthiest and strongest nation forever is the cause. We seem to have lost the competitive spirit, children are thrown in front of the television, indoctrinated into a life of consumerism before they can even speak words. What cause are we fighting for, what new space race are we having dreams about, what are the mysteries of the universe that we can unlock? I am pessimistic about the number of children interested in these questions.

Even college admissions has become a game. I went to Columbia University because I wanted a world class education, I wanted to be amongst the brightest minds we had to offer, and to open my eyes to new ideas. Every year I feel that college has become increasingly commercialized, universities are just name brands that we try to get into in order to pad our resumes and get higher paying jobs. We are even willing to pay thousands of dollars to practice a standardized test, we are willing to pay thousands for professionals to edit our college essays. Who is actually getting into the school, the child or the supporting cast? Our children are falling behind not because of illegal immigrants, but because they are not learning. Initiatives like no child left behind are fueled by a corporation-esque evaluation system, education cannot be run like this. As schools try harder to meet federal accountability measures, we teach students how to take tests, they are not actually learning anything. They are just becoming a statistic that makes that number counters happy. With favorable numbers, we forget that education's goal is to teach.

update:

There have been a number of comments on this article and for future readers, I would just like to clear something up. I am in favor of fixing the immigration policy of the United States, it is broken, it has been broken and especially given the security risks illuminated post 9/11, we should have come up with a solution by now.

Illegal immigration from Mexico, which is the thorn in the sides of most people interested in this subject should be examined. Mexicans come to the United States because of increased wages, plain and simple. The effort should have been on the Congress and the President of the U.S. to pressure President Fox of Mexico, and now President Felipe Calderon, to stimulate the Mexican economy and provide a stable job market and stronger economy so people wouldn't want to leave Mexico in the first place. Another thing we SHOULD have done and still should do is get rid of NAFTA, I think by now we can all see that it was the mother of all stupid ideas from the Clinton administration. NAFTA may have stimulated the member states' economy for a while, but we killed the Mexican economy with it so that we could flood their market with cheap American crops. There is 0 incentive to start non-subsistence farming in Mexico when the U.S. provides cheap goods that is kept afloat by protectionism.

The commentors are correct though, there are a lot of problems with illegal immigration, hence why it's "illegal". However we as a nation cannot be so willing to look for a scape goat for our domestic problems that we immediately blame illegal immigrants. How many of these mothers walk down the street and whisper nasty things every time they see a Hispanic face?

Mothers Against Illegal Immigration takes the most flagrant quotes by congressmen and uses them as arguments, substantiated or unsubstantiated. There have been a lot of questions about the effects of illegal immigration on the American healthcare system. In 2000, the Rand Corporation found that illegal immigration creates very little burden on taxpayers.
http://www.rand.org/news/press.06/11.14.html

If we take a microeconomics look, especially in very dense populations of illegal immigrants like California, we see a lot of serious healthcare issues. A large number of hospitals and emergency rooms closing, declining healthcare quality, high healthcare costs, etc. We take these statistics and instantly attribute them to illegal immigrants. Is that a possible cause? Sure. Is it definitely? No. Given that healthcare costs have been rising all over the country it is hard to automatically attribute it to illegals.

Healthcare in the U.S. has suffered hardships for many reasons. A large part of the burden is from those on Medicare and Medicaid, and those that are uninsured. There are many more Americans uninsured (40 millions + citizens ) than there illegal immigrants from mexico (~ 6 million), they cost a lot of money. The Center for Budget and Policy Priorities has tracked the decline in employer sponsored healthcare to be the number one reason for the massive increase in uninsured Americans over the last few years. While President Bush may tell you the economy is healthy, it is severely in debt. Americans are feeling the pinch and understandably they are looking for someone to blame. Look at the facts and the whole picture before you default to blaming illegal immigrants for the woes of a nation where illegals comprise ~3% of the population.

We should also put a lot of attention on middle class families like that of Terri King, who I believe left a comment on this blog. Terri's family is a sobering look at how healthcare costs are becoming increasingly unaffordable, even for upper middle class families. As care for Terri's new born approached $2 million, they were also approaching the upper limit of her husband's maximum lifetime health insurance. We have to be ashamed of our healthcare system if mothers like Terri are forced to make decisions of whether or not to take her newborn to the hospital or to take a chance and save a hospital visit and its costs for a more serious visit later. Affordable healthcare and health access is a right, and the fact that it is becoming further out of reach for increasing numbers of Americans should be a wake up call to our President and Congressmen and women.

graduation

There is a pile of clothes and books in the middle of my dorm room floor. In two days, I'll have moved out, thrown my graduation cap in the air, and flown home, away from the center of the world.

I wish I was staying in New York City, amongst friends... but I'll be returning to Florida for the next few years to work with Motorola. You can thank Columbia Career Services for biasing engineering opportunities to finance and consulting companies, and not unearthing the engineering companies in the city. If I haven't said goodbye to you, I'll always be around, I'm everywhere.

John McCain has Clearly Struck A Nerve

In a few short weeks, I will be graduating from Columbia University. Through real relationships and purely digital ones, stemming from my days on www.cucommunity.com and www.campusnetwork.com (sadly both have closed their doors), I've been exposed to a wide range of people and their beliefs. A lot of what I’ve seen has been well-intentioned activism, and a lot of it has been the self-important aggrandizing of those just needing a cause to hold onto, to justify their existence. This has been the biggest godsend that Columbia could have given me. John McCain's pending presence on our campus, May 16th, has exposed the limits of our liberalism; it has put out in the open the rift that has been growing between liberals and the self described "oppressed" conservative movement on our campus.

In our lives, we should welcome diverse opinions, if not to open our eyes to new truths then to reinforce our own. Columbia College Class Day is different, graduation is meant to be a celebration of the work we have put in during the last four years. The speaker is a reflection of those values which we as a group hold nearest to us. At Columbia, if those values were not progressiveness and diversity, I would be embarrassed to attend the school. When the news about McCain first came out there was an initial petition circulating, damning McCain for his affiliation with Jerry Falwell’s Liberty University. Jerry Falwell is an extremist for the far-right, it was ludicrous to put John McCain in the same boat or to argue that his presence represented his endorsement of Falwell’s beliefs. One could argue that McCain’s presence at Columbia was an endorsement of our generally liberal egalitarian views on the world.

Recently a friend of mine, Kate Mahoney began circulating a new petition. The central point is, “John McCain does not speak for us”, that he holds very conservative viewpoints that are completely at ends with our student body. Many have spouted off that the university setting is the perfect forum for diversity of ideology and they are correct, but protesting the choice of McCain as graduation speaker is no issue of free speech. What it reflects is a terrible decision by the administration and student governing board to extend an invitation to a controversial political figure, especially one far to the right of the majority of the university. Graduation is a time for celebration, not controversy and political activism. While I look forward to McCain’s speech and do not anticipate anything other than “you are the best and the brightest, go forth and make our country proud with your contribution, bye bye”, his selection has brought out the worst in us.

On the newly formed http://www.mccainatcolumbia.com , the site was intended to serve as a forum for discussion. This is what it has to offer.

-------------------------------------------------------
Kate Mahoney,

Oh Kate, you also come from a spoiled upbringing. You also got indoctrinated in the ways of elite. And to make yourself feel good you oppress others with your intolerance of other ideas. but keep up the work, because of people like you the voice of liberals is subdued and you hate is evident.. \Shame on you... Hater
 Bob Kerry (CC '06)

-------------------------------------------------------
Laura Cordetti,

You come from wealthy family. You are pampered and have no idea what the real world is like. Ive got an idea, give up all your money and get a 60 hour a week job. But please stop preaching you spoiled BRAT who has nothing better to do...
-- Laur is spoiled rich girl (CC '06)
-------------------------------------------------------
Kim Sue,

Please dont "enter the world". Please spare us your agenda on hate.. You hate all who disagree with you. You hate all who speak up for what they believe but you dont.... KIM SUE YOU ARE A HATER
-- KIMSUEHATES (CC '06)
-------------------------------------------------------
Laura Cordetti - GET A LIFE and get a job too. You poor thing!
-- Tom (Contributor)
-------------------------------------------------------

I don’t understand how voicing your opinion became such a call for hateful speech to come out of the woodwork. The hypocrisy that runs amuck in these comments is almost appalling, but not surprising. Perhaps it is the liberalism that dominates the campus that causes those of the more conservative persuasion to act out in desperation with ad-hominem and irrelevant personal attacks. This reminds me of my friend Laura being physically threatened after voicing her pro-choice sentiment. That was two years ago, we clearly have moved very far. The overarching sentiment in these website comments are that the some of the other comment writers are unqualified to make a judgment on the speaker because they are rich, don’t speak up for what they believe in, aren’t in the “real world”, etc. The fact of the matter is that many of the individuals being attacked have had a history of standing up for what they believe in and embracing their activism as a forum to make others more aware of domestic and global injustice. Their involvement is completely independent of monetary wealth and it is sad that anonymous commenters somehow equate privilege and economic stability as factors disqualifying one from participating in the public forum of ideas. Columbia’s liberalism continues from one generation to the next as it is obvious from the comments, the other side doesn’t have much to offer.

Joe Lieberman. Far Right in Disguise

A few months ago Joe Lieberman spoke out in defense of Catholic hospitals' right to turn away rape, sexual assault, and incest victims who were seeking emergency contraception. "hospitals that refuse to give contraceptives to rape victims for 'principled reasons' shouldn't be forced to do so… In Connecticut, it shouldn't take more than a short ride to get to another hospital”. In a way he's right, in another way he's callous and very much not right. Look around at the hospitals in New York City, in your town, in your suburb, how many hospitals are Catholic; how many have merged with the Catholic Church and you don't even know about it?

The Catholic Church is a huge financial power that controls more than a few hospitals across our nation. As the largest non-profit provider of healthcare, they have the financial resources to keep hospitals afloat that other organizations could not. More and more hospitals are either selling to the Catholic Church or affiliating themselves with them. Does your hospital provide EC? It's hard to know these days.

Lieberman justifies the Catholic position saying that there are plenty of other hospitals in Connecticut you could goto. That's fine for Connecticut, that's not fine for the many counties and cities where the Catholic hospital is the sole provider of healthcare and residents have no alternative.

Furthermore, what an insensitive comment. If you are a rape victim, I'm sure the last thing you need is to drive to the hospital in a state if duress only to be turned away. What are Americans to do when there is no procreative freedom, our morals are being governed by an organization that represents about 25% of our population and less than 10% in many of the states where the Catholic hospital has been deemed a "sole-provider". America was founded by those seeking to escape religious oppression, look around though, here we are again.
